“Jamie?”
“Yeah, buddy?”
“So, are you my new dad now?”
I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.
Before I’m able to find the power of speech again, he continues, “But you’re my boss too?”
I decide to play along. “Your boss?”
He nods. “At the house. Building and stuff.”
“Well, not exact—”
“So that makes you my dad boss then?” He has the most serious look on his face, and I’m totally out of my depth here.
“Um…” I look to the door, willing April to walk through it and save me.
“Dad boss then,” he says again with a nod. “That’s good. Means I can get more money now.”
I cough, reaching over to the nightstand to take a long, much-needed drink from my coffee cup. I say the only thing that comes to mind. “Sure thing, buddy.”
“Awesome,” he says, a huge smile transforming his face. “Then I can buy flowers for Mom, so the next time you break our garden, I can fix it and make her smile like you did.”
“That’s a great idea. Now… have you seen my pants?”
“Are you not wearing pajamas?” Without warning, he lifts the sheet covering me from the waist down. “Oh, you’ve got big boy boxers like me. Mommy says I can only wear them when I wear shorts though. Are you sure you wore pants last night? Maybe you wore shorts because you’ve got your big boy boxers on.” And thank fuck I kept them on before falling to sleep last night.
“I was definitely wearing pants. Do you want to look in the bathroom for me?”
“It’s okay. I don’t need to. I saw Mommy carrying them into the kitchen.”
“Lovely?” I yell, hoping she can hear me. When a loud beat starts coming from downstairs, my bullshit sensor starts pinging. April is up to something, especially since it’s the exact same Queen song I was playing the night we first met. Two can play this game.
“Should we go get pancakes?” I ask.
“Yeah!” he says, jumping up and down before running out of the room.
I move to the bathroom and use the facilities. Searching for my clothes, I come up empty. Sure enough, my pants have indeed disappeared. With nothing else left to do about it, I walk out of the bedroom and down the stairs, wearing nothing but my boxer shorts.
I stop still the moment I enter the kitchen. Just as I’d imagined, April is sitting at the dining table, coffee in hand, her legs up, her ankles crossed on a chair with a wicked smirk on her face. Her only saving grace is the huge plate of pancakes piled high in the middle of the table.
“Hey Ax, how’s breakfast?” I ask.
“So good,” he groans, stuffing another forkful of pancake in his mouth.
“What are you doing after school today?”
His head snaps up. “Nuff-thing,” he says with a mouthful of food.
“Good. I was thinking you could bring your mom and gran over and we could give them a tour of the house now that it’s finished.”
“Oh wow. Yeah,” he says, puffing out his little chest. “I can show them where I worked.”
“Yep,” I reply with a grin. With his attention back on his rapidly emptying plate, I move in front of April. ”You look good in my tee. Did you also find my pants on your travels?”
Her lips twitch. ”I thought I’d do some laundry.”
Work in Progress is a humorous, family orientated wonderful story that will leave you with a smile on your face throughout the whole storyline!
I just absolutely loved everything about Jamie and Aprils adventure especially with the witty banter and Aprils adorable son!
Jamies family is so caring, down to earth, supportive but also overboard in teasing, however its all in good fun and thats what this book was! It was kinda like reading about the Property Brothers!!
So beautiful, a book that will make your heart full and feeling like all is right in the world!
There were some parts that were so funny and I came out of the story thinking April and her family have found true gold in Jamie and his wonderful family!!!
Loved absolutely everything about it! I cannot wait to see what the author writes next and whose story it will be! I could read so much more!’

If you are after a fantastic rom com then this will definitely be right up your alley, just as it was mine!
What a perfect way to start a new series with a 5 star review and Work in Progress has certainly left me with lots of anticipation for the rest of the Cook County Series. This author knows how to give her fans romantic comedy and this book is rom com at its best.
April hasn’t had it easy as a single mum she has had many challenges in her life and after her ex husband left her she is bringing up her adorable son Axel with the help of her mother in law. Life is crazy busy with shifts as a nurse at the local hospital and any spare time is spent with Axel so there is never any alone time for this loving mum and the last thing she needs is a new neighbour disturbing her sleep after a long shift......
Jamie has just started renovating the house he is trying to flip and even though he feels remorse for disturbing his feisty neighbours sleep he can’t help riling her up. Who would have thought he would end up with such a gorgeous neighbour.....
An instant attraction and lots of witty banter all help make this a great read, it’s a book that will captivate you it will make you laugh and it will leave you smiling like a Cheshire Cat and once you add in the adorable Axel you get perfection. I fell in love with every character in this book and I’m excited for the rest of the series. This is romantic comedy at its best.

Book one in a brand new series and I for one cannot wait to see where BJ Harvey takes us, if Work in Progress is any indication. This is a great example at RomCom at it’s finest.
There is nothing that I did not enjoy about this book. From the first to the last page I was all in with Jamie Cook, April Williams and in fact the whole Cook family.
For April life as a single mum has had it’s challenges, throw in a mother who is a determined matchmaker and life certainly can be complicated. Jamie, ticked all the boxes for me with his humour, kindness and caring nature.
When Jamie moves next door, to work on a house he is planning to flip things certainly heat up. The banter between Jamie and April had me laughing hard at times and I fell in love with her son Axel.
Work in Progress is a laugh out loud romantic comedy but it is all about family, love and support and is a genuine feel good book and I could not wipe the smile off my face whilst reading. This book is a little gen, one click it, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Single parent romances have become a favourite of mine over the last 12 months and this one is high on my list of favourites. I really loved the growth of the relationship between Jamie and April, add in family members who absolutely cracked me up at times and I was totally invested.
BJ Harvey is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the Bliss Series. She regards herself as a smut peddler, suspense conjurer, and a funny romance thinker upper. An avid music fan, you will always find her singing some hit song badly and loving every minute of it.
