Jack and Ruby Walsh thought their sleepy town's Independence Day would be like all the others. That is, until an accidental explosion of fireworks destroys downtown Cherokee, Iowa. A witch-hunt ensues as WWII tensions rise, causing everyone to blame one immigrant German family for the fire. But was it really them? Only Jack and Ruby have the courage to fight for justice, even as they stand against the most corrupt in their community. Ignited by their white-hot passion for each other, the two stick together until they have Cherokee on its knees, rectifying its wrongs and uncovering a more sinister criminal network. RACE TO THE GALLOWS is a harrowing tale of love, loyalty, and courage. Based on true events in Northwest Iowa.

B&N Kobo

This book was a great read. It takes place during WWII. Ruby who is married to the Sheriff of a small town has some woman balls LOL!
On the 4th of July the small town of Cherokee, Iowa has it's own little war going on. Around this time in the states there was a draft going on. Jack, Ruby's husband wanted to go fight however Ruby didn't want him to. He tried to reassure her that he would stay with her. Little did he know that in Cherokee the citizens would pick sides. Are you on the Sheriff's side or are you on the Mayor's side.
There is a Russian family who fled Germany before their town was taken over. It happens. In Cherokee no one likes outsiders, especially one's who cause trouble. That's the thing though this family kept to themselves. The father did his work, the mother who spoke little English kept to herself except when it came to Ruby. The children though they wanted friends like any other child does.
When the fire struck the small town, who do they turn to? The outsiders. This was a great crime novel just about. Many twists and turns. It keeps you guessing on who actually did it. It also shows how money pays off even in the time of a depression.
Jack and Ruby they make a great team. They over came their fears together and solved a crime that for one the town folk had already judged others for. They set that record straight. I would recommend this book if you're looking for a nice read in which it will keep you guessing on who did it.
