Before The Lies

If I had known from the beginning what he would do to me, would I have changed anything?
No
No matter what had happened with him I never would have been led down the path that brought me to my soul mate.
For that I could never be sorry.
I just wish I'd had time to make my time count.
I wish I'd been able to see her grow.
I wish I could have said goodbye, to have felt his touch one last time.
The other man in my life took that away from me but I would never change a thing.
Although he was my undoing he was also my saviour, I just wish I could have been his.

This is my part of the story.

Before The Lies is a prequel to Elaine May's successful Truth series, although it can also be read as a standalone novel. Readers should be aware of its uncompromising storyline as it depicts the harsh reailty of Rosa's story.

The Truth Series

Before The Lies

This is a captivating read.  It keeps you interested, and moves quickly.   When the story begins we get a bit of back story on Isla and her father, who were part of a family that they were not related to by blood.  Isla losses her mother as a newborn and then at 12 loses her father, grandfather. her aunt and uncle; and is then taken by her remaining uncle and a cousin.  Isla gets shipped off to a boarding school until she turns 18.  She is then brought back, and held captive by her uncle John and cousin Jack in the basement of the family estate, where she becomes an unwilling sex slave. After 3 long years she is taken from the basement and moved into a suite at the family’s hotel and made to go to work as her Jack's personal assistant at the family’s business. Once out of the basement she runs into her other cousin, Joshua, who she loved a great deal as a small girl.

When she was younger, Isla and Joshua loved each other very much.  It was believed by all, that they would someday have a love that would last forever.   Joshua doesn't realize she is Isla he is quite drawn to her. As the story unfolds Joshua tries to save Isla and the family business from his uncle John and Jack.

This book is a dark romance, but the details of Isla’s treatment are insinuated and not given in graphic detail.  I loved the idea that Joshua and Isla were destined to be together since they were children.  That touched the romantic in me.

This book does end as a cliffhanger, but that’s ok.  I’m anxiously waiting for the next book to come out.

Excerpt

As she sat on a park bench in the middle of Central Park, she couldn’t get over how beautiful and peaceful it was. The trees may have long ago lost their leaves and the grass may have looked almost dead due to the winter air, but Mother Nature was beautiful. Isla couldn’t help but feel blessed to be able to once again sit in the middle of it, rather than watch from a closed window. Looking at the picture-perfect view in front of her, Isla couldn’t believe she was in the centre of the most famous city in the world.

Although it was so cold, Isla couldn’t help but think how nice it was to be able to sit outside and feel the harsh wind against her cheek, breathe in the cold air, and just be able to be normal, even for just a little while.

Couples were walking hand in hand, children were screaming and running around and people just looked happy to enjoy the day. She’d always loved to be able to people-watch. People passed her by and it made her wonder what people would see if they stopped to notice her. Would they see the tears she had shed? Would they notice the finger marks around her neck. What would they see? Was it written all over her face that she was in hell, that she needed help?

PROLOGUE

GRACE

The man and lady of the house my Mummy works in, are screaming at each other and it’s really scary. I can’t remember their names, I’m sure it starts with a big H, but normally they are really nice to me and Mummy, but today is different and I don’t know why.
Mummy and I are downstairs and we can hear every word that is being said between the two of them.
I look over at Mummy and her cold blue eyes that once told me she loved me, now tell me something completely different. They tell me everything she won’t say to me, even though I don’t want it to be true.
“This is all your fault.” I jump at the scary sound above me that sounds like something special is breaking.
“You can tell your British slut to get out of my house.”
“She has nowhere else to go, darling.”
“Don’t you dare darling me, you bastard.” I can hear something else break above and the man says a naughty word. I look over at Mummy and attempt to move towards her for a cuddle, but she walks away from me just as I hear the lady continue shouting.
“You know what? I don’t care about the business over here. You can tell Edward we are moving back to America. I don’t care about that slut and her little bastard.”
All of a sudden the picture changes before me and my adult self is flying through the town I grew up in and I can see my whole childhood before me. All the nasty words my mother or stepfather ever said to me. The slaps to the face my mother loved to give me when she felt I’d done something wrong.
“This is all your fault.”
“You worthless piece of shit.”
“I hate you, we hate you. Even your father couldn’t stand to be near you.”
“He left us, because of you.”
“We live like this, because of you. YOU, GRACE.”
“You won’t amount to anything, you’re useless.”
“I wish I never had you, I hate you and you’re worthless.”
I can feel all the hatred centered in on that little girl and I can feel all the tears she doesn’t show as she grows into the teenager who hates and loathes herself so much. I can see my teenage self standing by the edge of the River Tone just before its cold waters engulf me, drowning me and pulling me down to its depths with my own self-hatred and sorrow. I try to reach the water’s surface, but the cold water is keeping me down, engulfing me with the old memories that still haunt me.
“You’re worthless.”
“You won’t amount to anything.”

What Others Are Saying

Wow what can I say about this book it is utterly heartbreaking but in a great way from a readers point of view it pulls you in from the very first page ~ Goodreads Review

This is an incredible book. The suspense is amazing, and there are scenes that had me in bits. I won't say which one (spoilers) but one in particular was one of the most tense, incredible, edge-of-my-seat writing I've ever read. ~ Goodreads Review

Oh lord this is this book needs very little said about it other than the fact that it is a stunningly beautiful story. ~ Goodreads Review

It’s raw, it’s confronting, it’s heartbreaking, it’s breathtaking. The emotions that this novel was able to evoke in us left us in all honesty speechless. From the very first sentence right until the very end we couldn’t put it down. ~ Goodreads Review

A beautiful story!!
Wow! When you start a book not quite expecting how the book goes, especially from the synopsis and finding it difficult to put down, makes it a very enjoyable read!
I felt incredibly sad at the way Grace viewed herself and the way her childhood was. She was trying to make her life better by doing well at her job and getting somewhere in her life.
Samuel- what can I say about him, but what a beautiful man with a heart of gold. His pursuit of Grace, the way he viewed her and the way he treated her, made him a caring, special man in my eyes.
This story reiterates that how you are treated by your family when you are younger, can have a detrimental effect on you later in life and the way you view yourself! I loved the direction this book went as well as how it ended...there are times when it's just heart wrenching to read but with Samuel and his family's support, Grace becomes a part of something special!!!
A love story with a difference!!
