Note from the author: Some years ago, a good friend of mine (who was in the same naval helicopter squadron as my husband) suffered through a horrific helicopter crash. This book depicts some of the real events of that accident. Please be forewarned that, although the story is ultimately one of triumph, it is heart-wrenching in spots.
Compelled to join an operation by an admiral with a personal agenda, Lieutenant Kyle “Mikey” Hammond finds himself thrust into the harsh desert terrain of northern Pakistan. Four American engineers have been kidnapped, and Kyle is tasked to work with Samantha, a civilian authority on Pakistan, whose expertise in terrorist negotiations is the hostages’ only hope. However, this is just one part of Kyle’s assignment. He’s also operating off a set of top-secret orders that could ruin his military career.
From the outset, Samantha’s negotiations with the terrorists walk the sharp edge between life and death. But she is an expert at such shrewd tactics…tactics that soon begin to mirror her personal dealings with the enigmatic Navy lieutenant. Determined to unearth the true Kyle, Samantha engages in a cat-and-mouse game with him that ends up peeling away some of her own carefully concealed layers. Once both their masks are lowered, love blossoms between them. But when the daring hostage rescue finally gets underway, a horrifying accident nearly shatters everything they’ve worked to attain. Their survival will hinge on the strength of their love…and if the man she’s certain can save the day will become the hero he’s convinced he’s not.

Having read briefly about Kyle “Mikey” Hammond in Eight – Two Three and Beyond The Call of Duty I was hopeful the next book would be his. From the previous books I was sure that there was more to him than we have seen so far.
When I first met Kyle “Mikey” Hammond, I thought he was a bit of a jerk. Having now read this book I have changed my mind. His life has been complicated and challenging; and that is even before he heads out on the mission that will change his life forever.
It was surprising that Kyle would find the love of his life on a highly dangerous mission in Northern Pakistan. Assisting with the rescue of kidnapped hostages, he is also tasked with an additional top secret mission that could well end his career. Samantha “Max” Dougin is a reporter who is an expert on Pakistan and is the civilian who will act as the hostage negotiator.
Kyle and Max are obviously drawn to each other and Max is determined to draw Kyle out. I really loved Kyle and Max together. Max is one feisty woman who I would want as a friend and it was great to see their relationship blossom. The characters are well written and the chemistry between Kyle and Max was at times intense.
I enjoy Ms. Tappan’s writing style and found this book to be full of complex layers that were peeled back one at a time.
This was action packed from start to finish and I loved it. The fact that Tracy Tappan writes with obvious military knowledge, really made some of the events real to me. At times I really felt that I was there watching from the sidelines
When tragedy strikes, my heart broke for all those involved, and having read Ms. Tappan’s comments advising that part of this story is based on personal knowledge from a friend who was involved in a horrific crash, it made it all that much more heartfelt. I certainly had tears I am not ashamed to admit.
Will Kyle and Max overcome tragedy and get their happily ever after?
I highly recommend this book and the series and look forward to reading more in this wonderful series.

I am new to the writings of Ms. Tappan. As a Naval Military Brat, I was intrigued by the description. I have not read the other book preceding this one, but I don’t feel like it hampered my ability to read this one. It does have quite a bit of military jargon, and acronyms. I liked the fact the glossary was available on the kindle by clicking the number that appeared at the end of the word being defined.
This is an emotional book, opening with a heart wrenching scene. It is also action packed, one of those stories where you’re on the edge of your seat, adrenaline pumping, as you want to fight back and shoot the terrorists in the story. The two main characters are believable in their descriptions and the way they are portrayed. She captured with perfect reality, Kyle’s inner demons and struggles that stem from his past. She also perfectly portrayed Samantha’s tough exterior masks the person she really is.
The flow of the book keeps your attention and keeps you reading. At times your heart strings are being tugged, and you feel an emotional connection as if you are really experiencing it first hand. Other times you find yourself in a bloodthirsty frenzy of emotion, wanting to shoot at the “bad guys” yourself.
Every character in the book is well thought out, and add that much more detail and intricacy to the story line.
This is a story that is worth the reading, and I would highly recommend it.
